Naming Ceremonies

The arrival of a child is a wonderful and life-changing milestone in the life of any family, and it’s so important to celebrate it.  Not every family wants a religious ceremony, like a christening – but they still want to mark this joyful occasion.  So, more and more families are choosing to have a Naming Ceremony.

In a Naming Ceremony, a child is welcomed into the circle of its family and friends. Parents and special people (usually known as 'Guideparents') make promises to love, support, guide and be there for that child throughout their life.  Namings aren’t only for babies – parents often decide to have a ceremony to celebrate an older child, or to welcome an adopted, or foster child.

Before I write a Naming Ceremony for your child, I will spend time to getting know you as a family.  Together, we’ll develop a happy and relaxed event, full of joy and laughter, to celebrate your little one.

We can consider having a theme to the day, if that’s something you’d like – maybe your child loves animals, or dinosaurs, or has a favourite book that we can use as a starting point.  We can include music, poems, nursery rhymes, readings from grandparents, friends, or perhaps older brothers and sisters or cousins.  We can have little rituals to involve everyone.  Whatever works for you and your child, we can do.
